The English new year comes with lots of festivity in the tribal dominated areas in Assam’s Morigaon district. The most striking festival in the district in mid January is Jonbeel Mela. The unique event takes place near Jagiroad where the age old barter system is revived at least for three to four days.

The tribal people from the hills of Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao and Meghalaya comes down to participate in the unique system a week ahead of the fair. These tribal people include Tiwa, Karbi, Khasi, Jaintia who have their own home products.

They perform a special function to worship the fire god before the huge and unique fair. During this mela the 'govaraja' or the titular king of the Tiwas along with his courtiers visit this mela and collect taxes from his subjects. They further enjoy the traditional tribal songs and dances. This event is believed to have been bridging the yawning gap between the hills and valleys.

Jon and Beel are Assamese words that stand for the Moon and a wetland. It signifies a large natural water body is shaped like a crescent moon. Usually, more than10000 tribal villagers from the nook and corners of Assam and Meghalaya joined the event and spend the week at makeshift bamboo huts as a greater family and share their moments. Feasting gives them joy and merriment.
