Chumpa, the name of a harvest festival in Manipur beckons no less tourists to the north eastern state in December just after the Tangkhul Nagas reap the crops. The word “Chumpha” stands for opening of granary and the festival is celebrated in a big way in Ukhrul district and Somra hills. They share the joy of the festival for three days with much fanfare and extravaganza. Women have a great role in this festival where art and culture of the Tangkhul Nagas are preserved with care.
 
The celebration takes place for seven days. But the first three days are crucial who songs, dances and funs are allowed to dominate. The women here find an occasion to enjoy it the festivity with their families and neighbours who shoulder the responsibility to preserving their age old art and culture. The striking part of the festival is the ending ceremony where the people take out a huge cultural procession in different villages and town alike.

The people of other communities also share equal joy of the festival undoubtedly revives unity and integrity among the various ethnic groups who have been living in the state for ages. The festival, in fact, reflects the unique tradition and culture of the Tangkhul Naga community where the women are allowed to take a vital role in most of the parts. The best places to visit during this festival are Ukhrul and Somra hills where these people are found available.
