Ramjan of Manipuri Muslims

Thursday, April 7, 2016

The Muslims in Manipur celebrate the eid with much traditional religious fervour boosting bonhomie among the people of different castes and creeds. Known as Ramjan eid among Meitei Pangal, the joyous festival falls in the nineth month of Hijri year. Pomp and gaiety grip the people as they celebrate the biggest and most popular eid festivals in the north eastern state.

Festivity grips the Muslims after they shun the day long fast during the entire month. They take food only after the sunset. However, the new moon breaks the fasting and then they celebrate the occasion with feast apart from distributing fruits and sweets. Before that they participate in the community namaj. The Id-Ul-Fitre marks the end of Ramjan eid of vigor and fervor literally means the fast breaking festival. Fitr is derived from the word ‘fatar’ meaning breaking. Fitr has another meaning derived from another word fitrah meaning ‘alms’. The Muslims have been celebrating the occasion since the time of Prophet Mohammed.
