Sikkim wears a festive look at the Maghey Sankranti. The festivity begins as soon as coldwaves hit the hilly north eastern state in December. But the festival takes place in mid January which continues for three days. Maghey Sankranti is basically a religious festival. But the festivity spreads beyond the barriers of the religion and people of all walks of life make the occasion a grand success.

The fair sites break into a sea of humanity much to the delight of the tourists who throng the river banks of Jorethang, Saramsa, Rorathang and Triveni. Hindu devotees throng in thousands at the dawn of the day and bath offering puja to the sungod which looks beautiful indeed. People from other north eastern state also participate in the festival where apart from devotional songs folk songs and dances.
